Food in Colombia often gets a bad rap. Many people who haven't visited this country think the food doesn't vary much past black beans and plantains. This is simply not accurate as there are are a lot of high quality food to be had here. There are plenty of food experiences that you must have if you visit Colombia.
Breakfast: Waffles
Many people are surprised to find that waffles are quite popular in Colombia. You can choose waffles that are either sweet or savoury. If you aren't sure what to get on your waffles, you can't go wrong with the caramel sauce. You can also pair your waffles with a homemade crepe.
Lunch: Ceviche
Being that Colombia has a massive coastline, expect to find a lot of seafood here. If you are wanting to try some of it, choose the Ceviche. It's fresh and the portions are often large.
Snack: Obleas
Those looking for just something to snack on should pick up some Obleas. They are sold on street carts and are made out of wafers stacked on top of each other. In between each layer there is some sort of sauce such as jam or caramel. Sometimes grated cheese can be found in them as well. If you just want a little something to tide you over until dinner, just pick an Obleas that has three layers. Now, if you are feeling particularly hungry or are planning on sharing it with your travel mates, you can opt for one that's 6, 7 or more layers.
Dinner: Paisa Bandeja
There's a good chance that you will be feeling hungry after spending the day walking around Colombia. This is why Paisa Bandeja makes a good choice for dinner. It usually includes sausage, eggs, mincemeat, rice, avocado, plantains and arepa. The portions are large so you might want to share this dish.
Dessert: Fruit
The fruit in Colombia is, well, amazing. If you are looking for something light, pick a fruit popsicle from a street vendor. You will find that there are often a variety of different flavors to choose from. If you are looking for an actual piece of fruit, go for the mango slices. The vendor you buy them from will usually drizzles lime or lemon juice over them and dip them in salt. The mixture of the sour, sweet and saltiness will really awaken your taste buds.
